Magazines looking for art

Howdy. I'm just starting to try to gather information, hoping a) that having the information gathered in any form will be helpful; and b) that having the information gathered will spawn more information being sent to me; and c) that having the information all in one place will help figure out what is essential information and what is not, and how best to organize it all.

Want to contribute information to Clio? Email me at clio-info@erif.org! If there's a good response, this will all get shoved into a database and made searchable and all that.

Baen's Universe - www.baensuniverse.com/Art_sub.htm - We are still commissioning new artists to illustrate stories for the magazine, and we plan to continue to showcase the work of some new talent. However, we’ve had a lot of interest, and we can only take on a very limited number of new artists. If you want to sell your art-work to Universe, which, yes, is one of your best chances to have your work on display with the writings of a stellar group of authors, this is what you need to do: Write to Dave Freer, artdirector@baensuniverse.com. We’re an electronic magazine, and we only accept electronic communications to the art department for practical reasons - one of which is that the art department is in Africa. (see site for full details)

Cincinnati Review - www.cincinnatireview.com/ - The Cincinnati Review is looking for portfolios of artwork to feature in upcoming issues. We consider all forms of art and ask that artists submit twenty high-quality print outs or JPEGs of 300 dpi. Upon acceptance we will ask for original slides for our printer to scan. We will usually feature a single artist in each issue with one work appearing on the cover and eight additional images in an interior portfolio printed in full color on a high gloss stock. Upon publication we pay a small honorarium and five contributor copies. Additional copies are available at a discount. Address submissions to the Art Editor at The Cincinnati Review, PO Box 210069, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221-0069

New England Review - cat.middlebury.edu/~nereview/guidelines%20cover%20art.html - We are looking for striking artwork in any genre (painting, photo, etc.) that will reproduce well as cover art. We prefer abstraction over illustration. The cover will be in full-color, full bleed, with the magazine’s logo in overprint. The size of the cover is 10 by 7 inches, so the image may need to be adjusted to fit the trim size. Artists interested in being featured on our cover are encouraged to send digital images by email to nereview@middlebury.edu (see site for specificy submission guidelines)

Realms of Fantasy - www.rofmagazine.com/pages/guidelines - You may submit samples of your work in the form of digital files, 35mm slides, 4x5 tranparencies, tearsheets, color or B & W photocopies. Strange Horizons - www.strangehorizons.com/guidelines/art.shtml - Send three pieces representing the body of work you would like to exhibit to art@strangehorizons.com. (see site for specific submission guidelines) NOTE: Along with your submission, please indicate if you're interested in doing on-demand illustration, the gallery, or both. Submissions are archived for possible future commissions, so it is important that we know who's interested in creating images for stories. If no notice is given, it will be assumed that the artist is just interested in having work displayed in the gallery.

Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities - www.traders.com/documentation/EDitorial_Dept/artist.html - We are looking for art that is relevant to technical analysis and trading as well as to the article for which the art piece is assigned. The Art Director, Christine Morrison assigns art monthly for an upcoming issue. cmorrison@traders.com - For cover art, we require two elements to be present: first, that the content of the art is generically representational of technical analysis and trading; and second, that colors used are bright enough to stand out on the newsstand. The cover art for any given issue is usually used inside the magazine as well to introduce one of our articles. Therefore, the concept used for the cover art will usually be based on an article.

QUERY - UNPAID

MAGAZINES CLOSED (OR CLOSED TO ART) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Cabinet Magazine - www.cabinetmagazine.org/information/submissions.php - Cabinet publishes artist projects that treat the magazine itself as an exhibition venue. Unlike most contemporary art magazines, we would like our reader to actually encounter the artwork rather than simply learn of its existence. Photography, conceptual projects, text-based work, or work that treats the formal issues raised by the print medium (i.e; paper, printing, ink, etc.) are particularly well-suited for publication in Cabinet. We do not publish documentation of sculpture, or a performance or installation. Video stills and architecture proposals are also highly unusual for us to print. While a resume is not needed, a brief statement about the work can be included if you think it useful. Don't forget that artist projects appear in both the unthemed and themed portions of the magazine. - contact at submissions@cabinetmagazine.com - SEE SITE FOR themes/dates - Cabinet is not commissioning artist projects until further notice.
